STEP 1 / THE CHALLENGE
The 10-Swing Barrel Test
SET IT UPTee at belt height, middle of the plate, hitting into a net. Helmet on. Ten swings at normal game effort with a short reset between each.
HOW TO SCORECount a barrel only if the ball comes off hard on a line or firm grounder — not a top-spinner, pop-up or foul tip.
STEP 2 / THE ONE FIX · 5 MINUTES
Barrel Through the Middle
Contact quality improves when hitters learn to send the barrel through a realistic zone, not sweep blindly across it.
THE CUE“Barrel through the ball.”
THE DRILLSet tee at middle and slightly away. Complete two groups of five, noting direction and whether swing path stays controlled.
- 8U: Use short tee or foam-ball sessions and a large easy contact target. Praise balance and effort, never exit velocity.
- 10U: Mix tee locations and predictable short soft toss; ask one take/attack decision at a time.
- 12U: Increase variability of pitch locations and counts without adding dangerous speeds or mechanical overload.
STEP 3 / THE RETEST
Same challenge. Same rules. Go.
Say the cue out loud once — “Barrel through the ball.” — then run The 10-Swing Barrel Test again exactly like the first time.
Safe practice: Only hit into a clear net or open, supervised field. An adult manages one hitter at a time. Helmets and age-appropriate balls are recommended; never stand in a bat swing path.
