OFF-SPEED · AGES 7–12
Curveballs are just moving balls.
A breaking ball can feel mysterious to a young hitter. It starts in one place and finishes somewhere else. That is frustrating—but it is also learnable.
Young hitters learn to hit curveballs by seeing lots of moving pitches and waiting longer, not by learning an adult system. Use Wiffle ball, changing toss speeds and the cue “see it longer” so the player decides after the ball shows what it is.
Train it: 30-Day Changing Speeds →The first job is not to crush every curveball. The first job is to see more moving pitches and stay calm when one appears.
See the spin
Watch baseball or softball clips with the sound off. Pause just after release and let the player guess: straight, up or down? There is no need to be perfect. The game trains attention.
Do not rush
Most young hitters miss off-speed pitches because they are ready too early. A good reminder is “see it longer.” That keeps the player from making their decision before the ball tells them what it is.
Play moving-ball games
Wiffle ball, soft toss with different speeds and safe short-distance tosses all help. The goal is exposure, not a complicated adult pitch-recognition system.
Parent reminder: At 12U, confidence and curiosity are wins. Celebrate the player who sees a moving pitch and does not panic.
Parent questions
Why can't my child hit a curveball?
Most young hitters are ready too early and commit before the ball shows its spin. Training them to “see it longer” and exposing them to moving pitches helps more than changing the swing.
At what age do kids see curveballs?
It depends on the league, but players start seeing more moving and slower pitches as they move up through the youth levels. Getting comfortable with moving balls early makes that jump easier.
What is a safe way to practice hitting breaking balls?
Wiffle ball and plastic or foam balls tossed from a short distance let a player see real movement safely and cheaply.
