You said yes to coaching your kid’s team. Now there’s a paperwork email, a training link and a practice on Tuesday. Here’s what you really need to coach youth baseball or softball, and what will actually help when 11 kids show up with bats.
Most youth leagues don’t require a coaching certification. They require a background check, safety and abuse-awareness training and a volunteer application, and the rules vary by league. A hitting certification is optional; a simple plan that keeps every kid swinging helps young players most.
Train it: 46/60 Coach Playbook →Do you need a certification to coach youth baseball?
Usually not a coaching certification. What most leagues require is about keeping kids safe. Every league sets its own rules, so check yours.
- Little League: a volunteer application every year, an annual background check, and Little League’s Abuse Awareness Training every year before you start. Little League doesn’t require a coaching certification.
- USA Softball tournament teams: Junior Olympic championship teams need at least one current-year ACE coach in the dugout, background checks for the adults, and SafeSport training when players are 17 or under.
- Travel and club teams: rules vary by organization. Ask your director what you need before the first practice.
Do those first. They protect the kids and keep your team eligible.
What does the required training cover?
Background checks and abuse-awareness training are about who is around kids and how adults behave. That matters most of all.
But they aren’t built to teach you how to help a 9-year-old who keeps swinging under the ball, or how to run a practice where kids aren’t standing in line. That part is up to you, and it’s where most volunteer coaches feel lost.
What actually helps a volunteer coach?
- Run stations: tee, soft toss and a fun game at the same time, so every kid swings a lot instead of waiting.
- Use kid words: short cues a 7-year-old remembers, like “ready like a shortstop” or “foot down, hands back.”
- Teach one thing per practice: balance one week, getting the foot down on time the next.
- Keep it fun: games, points and high fives. Kids who like practice come back.
- Be safe: spacing between hitters, soft balls for close tosses, and stop if a player has pain.
Not sure what your players need first? Have parents run the free Quick Check with their kids. Six simple cards give each player one clear first step.
What does a simple first hitting practice look like?
- 5 minutes: a fun warm-up game with running and throwing.
- 10 minutes: show the one skill for today, slow and easy.
- 30 minutes: three stations of 10 minutes each: tee, soft toss and a hitting game. Rotate on a whistle.
- 10 minutes: a team game with points for hard contact.
- 5 minutes: huddle up. Each kid says one thing they did well.
That’s an hour where every player gets dozens of swings and nobody stands in line.
Where does the 46/60 Coach Playbook fit?
The 46/60 Coach Playbook is a hitting playbook for volunteer coaches of 8U, 10U and 12U teams, baseball and fastpitch. It isn’t a required credential and it doesn’t replace your league’s training. It’s the practice plans.
- 24 coach lessons: what to teach in kid words, why, how to teach it, 3 cues, and what wrong looks like
- A printable 60-minute station plan for every practice, with a softball note
- $59, 1 year of access, and Lessons 1–3 are free

No. Little League requires a volunteer application, an annual background check and Abuse Awareness Training every year, but no coaching certification. Your local league may add its own steps.
What training do youth softball coaches need?
It depends on the league. USA Softball Junior Olympic championship teams need a current ACE coach in the dugout, background checks and SafeSport training for teams with players 17 or under. Check your league’s rules.
How do I run a youth hitting practice with one coach?
Use stations. Put kids at a tee, a soft-toss spot and a hitting game at the same time and rotate every 10 minutes, with a parent helper at each spot if you can.
