STEP 1 / THE CHALLENGE
The Decision Dash
SET IT UPSet a cone 15 feet before a base. Runner jogs at half speed; as they pass the cone, adult shows GO (arm waving) or HOLD (hands up) — mix it up.
HOW TO SCORECount a right call only if the runner reacts correctly and stays under control — no stumbling, no blowing through a HOLD.
STEP 2 / THE ONE FIX · 5 MINUTES
Listen, Look, Decide
Coaches and base runners share information; looking up at the right moment reduces uncertainty.
THE CUE“Eyes up at the decision.”
THE DRILLAdult serves as first-base coach and flashes HOLD or GO cards as runner approaches a marker at half speed.
- 8U: Practice first-base running lanes, stop/go coach calls, and legal starting positions without leads unless the league permits them.
- 10U: Add simple line-drive/fly-ball reads and base-coach communication at modest speeds.
- 12U: Mix relay, tag-up and first-to-third reads while verifying lead and steal rules for this division.
STEP 3 / THE RETEST
Same challenge. Same rules. Go.
Say the cue out loud once — “Eyes up at the decision.” — then run The Decision Dash again exactly like the first time.
Safe practice: No collisions or headfirst slides in practice. Respect local division rules for leads, stealing, tag-ups and sliding; use suitable safe surfaces.
