Scared of the Baseball Fix

Coach Quick Reference

The standard

Treat fear as a performance and safety issue, never a character flaw. Your goal is not to force a player through it. Your goal is to help them rebuild visual control, an athletic position, decision confidence, and controlled competition one rep at a time.

Coach language

Say: “You own the next safe step.” “Taking is a skill.” “Let’s repeat the level that lets you stay athletic.”

Do not say: “Don’t be scared.” “Just stand in there.” “You have to get hit to learn.” Do not surprise a hitter with speed or inside location.

Before raising difficulty

Confirm the player can see the ball from release, use their reset routine, remain in athletic position through the rep, and report readiness. Change one variable at a time: speed or location or decision complexity—not all three.

The confidence ladder

  1. Safe position and predictable tracking
  2. Take/attack choice at slow predictable speed
  3. Stationary and controlled moving contact
  4. Game-like preparation only when readiness supports it

Escalate appropriately

Stop for pain, dizziness, new vision symptoms, suspected concussion/head injury, clinician restriction, or sustained significant distress. Direct the family to qualified medical or mental-health support as appropriate.
